Tourist, 21, Thought She Had a Stomach Bug — Then Doctors Told Her She Was in Labour

By David Brooks • Viral News

A British backpacker received the shock of her life after visiting hospital with what she believed was a simple stomach bug — only to discover she was actually in labour.

The 21-year-old traveller had been exploring Australia’s east coast when sudden stomach pains forced her to seek medical help.

But instead of diagnosing an illness, doctors quickly realised something far more surprising was happening.

Within hours, the young tourist became a mother.

Holiday adventure takes a dramatic turn

The woman, Hattie Sheppard, had been travelling across Australia with her boyfriend Bailey Cheadle during a six-month backpacking trip.

Like many young travellers, the couple had spent their time enjoying beach parties, sightseeing and boat trips along the country’s famous coastline.

But during the journey, Sheppard suddenly developed severe stomach cramps which she initially believed were caused by a stomach bug.

When the pain intensified, she decided to visit Gold Coast University Hospital in Queensland for treatment.

Doctors discover the real cause

At the hospital, doctors carried out an ultrasound to investigate the source of the pain.

What they found left the young traveller stunned.

Instead of an infection or stomach issue, the scan revealed Sheppard was already in labour.

She later recalled seeing the confused look on the doctor’s face before he delivered the unexpected news.

At first, she didn’t believe him.

A baby arrives just hours later

Despite the shock, Sheppard gave birth to a healthy baby girl just 10 hours after arriving at hospital.

The newborn, named Isla-Grace Cheadle, weighed around 6.4 pounds.

Doctors confirmed both mother and baby were healthy following the unexpected delivery.

What made the situation even more surprising was that Sheppard had experienced no obvious pregnancy symptoms beforehand.

Why she didn’t know she was pregnant

Doctors later explained that several unusual factors contributed to the hidden pregnancy.

In Sheppard’s case, the placenta was positioned at the front of her stomach, which prevented her from feeling the baby’s movements.

The baby was also growing close to her spine, which meant there was no visible baby bump.

Sheppard was also living with Graves’ disease, an autoimmune condition that can affect weight and hormone levels — something that may have masked other symptoms.

The rare phenomenon known as cryptic pregnancy

Medical experts later explained that Sheppard experienced what is known as a cryptic pregnancy.

This occurs when someone is pregnant but does not experience the usual signs such as weight gain, nausea or a noticeable bump.

While rare, the condition is not unheard of.

In Australia, it is estimated that around one in 2,500 pregnancies are only discovered at the moment labour begins.

Living a normal life while unknowingly pregnant

Perhaps the most surprising part of the story is that Sheppard had been living a completely normal lifestyle during the months leading up to the birth.

She described herself as an adrenaline lover and had taken part in activities such as boat trips and a high-speed slingshot ride during the trip.

Photos taken just weeks before the birth even show her wearing fitted clothing with no visible sign of pregnancy.

Two weeks before the baby arrived, the couple had also celebrated New Year’s Eve together on the beach watching fireworks.

A trip that changed everything

What began as a backpacking adventure across Australia turned into a life-changing moment for the young couple.

Instead of returning home with travel memories alone, they are now heading back to the UK with their newborn daughter.

Sheppard has described the experience as surreal but ultimately joyful.

Despite the shock, she said she couldn’t be happier about the unexpected arrival of Isla-Grace.
