A bizarre viral image claiming to show a “newly discovered fish species” found off the coast of Venezuela has been sending the internet into meltdown — and it’s easy to see why. The creature in the photo appears to have an uncanny resemblance to President Donald Trump, complete with what looks like a sweeping golden-orange quiff.
The image was first posted by hacktivist collective Anonymous on X (formerly Twitter), with the caption claiming a brand new species had been discovered in Venezuelan waters and that it bore a striking likeness to the 47th president. Within hours, the post had racked up millions of views and endless reactions from people who couldn’t believe what they were seeing.
Comments flooded in from all sides. Some were howling with laughter: “Nature is the greatest comedian,” wrote one user. Others were less impressed, pointing out that the whole thing seemed a little too convenient. And they weren’t wrong.

But here’s the twist — it’s not actually a new species
Experts quickly weighed in to rain on the parade. The fish in the image appears to be a longhorn cowfish (Lactoria cornuta) — a real and well-known species from the boxfish family, found in the Indo-Pacific region, not Venezuela. The National Aquarium describes the longhorn cowfish as a “charismatic” creature recognised by its distinctive long horns that protrude from the front of its head.
The image itself is also suspected to be AI-generated or heavily edited, with the Trump-like colouring and hair-style seemingly added for effect. In other words: this wasn’t a scientific discovery. It was a meme — a very convincing, very viral meme.
This isn’t the first “Trumpfish” to go viral
Believe it or not, this is far from the first time a fish has been compared to the orange-tinted president. Back in 2017, visitors to the Sea Life Centre in Blackpool spotted an orange frogfish in one of the tanks and couldn’t stop laughing at the resemblance. The images went viral at the time, with many declaring it a dead ringer for then-president Trump.
More recently, a Reddit user shared a photo of their pet fish that also drew comparisons to Trump, sparking another round of internet chaos. It seems whenever nature produces something orange, lumpy, and slightly bewildering, the internet has only one reference point.
The internet doesn’t care that it’s fake
Of course, as with most viral moments, the truth hasn’t really dampened the fun. The debunked post continued to spread long after fact-checkers stepped in, with thousands of people sharing it purely for the comedy value. “Real or not, I need this fish to have its own press briefing,” one X user wrote.
Anonymous — known for their provocative stunts and anti-establishment messaging — clearly timed the post to coincide with heightened tensions between the US and Venezuela, where the Trump administration has been ramping up political and economic pressure. Whether it was a piece of political satire, a straight-up troll, or just excellent meme work, it landed exactly as intended.
The longhorn cowfish, for its part, remains unbothered — living its best life somewhere in the Indo-Pacific, blissfully unaware that its doppelgänger just broke the internet.
