The Super Mario Galaxy Movie has officially become the highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2026, crossing $629 million at the global box office and setting a string of records along the way.
The film opened over the Easter weekend to a massive $372.5 million globally, the biggest opening since James Cameron’s Avatar: Fire and Ash over Christmas 2025. Domestically, it posted $190.1 million over the five-day holiday corridor, including a three-day opening weekend of $130.9 million.
Those numbers were just the beginning. In its second weekend, the film added $68 million domestically, helping push its worldwide total past the $600 million milestone and beyond.

The film is now the highest-grossing domestic original animated release since Pixar’s Coco in 2017, a remarkable achievement given that the genre has faced significant headwinds in recent years. It has also helped push 2026’s domestic box office revenue to $2.113 billion by early April, representing a 23.5 percent increase on the same period in 2025.
The performance is particularly significant for Universal Pictures and Nintendo, who partnered on the film following the blockbuster success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, which earned over $1.3 billion worldwide. Galaxy appears to be on a trajectory that could rival or even surpass that total.
For a box office industry still finding its footing after years of disruption, this kind of sustained performance from a family-friendly animated sequel is exactly the kind of news the cinema world needed.
